Meet Cassandra Santor
What initially inspired you to become a wedding planner?
While living in New York City, I was approached by a neighbor who heard that I worked at Martha Stewart in the Weddings Division. Gail and Lance were looking for someone to help them plan and oversee their wedding, and a few conversations later I had booked my first client! That was when I realized that many of the things I had been curious about and that had become passions of mine, such as photography, floral design, tabletop and fine dining, built the perfect “tool belt” for wedding planning and design.
Tell me a little about your business, Cassandra & Company Weddings
Having been in the wedding industry for over 16 years, it’s fun to think back to the early days.
Cassandra & Company was created by word-of-mouth back in New York City. My client, who was working for Christies at the time, came up with the business name and it stuck. I moved to Los Angeles in 2004 and slowly got to know the area and depth of talent on this coast and soon enough was back in business.
Initially most of my clients were destination brides: Hawaii, Seattle, Europe and beyond. When I met and married my husband, I decided to focus more locally and now LOVE to design and plan in our home state of California. Many of my brides connect with me from other major cities and choose Los Angeles and Southern California as their destination wedding location.
You worked as a design consultant for Martha Stewart Weddings, what has been one of your favorite trends in wedding styling over the years? Is there anything that should be brought back for 2016 brides?
Hmm, good question! The former editor-in-chief at Martha Stewart Weddings, Darcy Miller, reignited a trend that has stuck since 2000 that I still love — the dessert buffet. I love seeing how my brides want to satisfy their sweet tooth, and it’s fun design opportunity that’s also a huge hit with guests.
I am loving mixed metals, and some of the tabletops at Casa de Perrin sets my heart afire.
I would also love it if couples would dig deep into their personal and family histories to include details that show and tell who they are and aspire to become together.
What do you tell brides who feel overwhelmed with all of the engagement To-Dos?
I think most engaged couples get overwhelmed in the planning process. Even if they’re on an even-keel and feel settled someone else might touch a nerve unknowingly. It’s important for the couple to take time off from planning during their engagement and pepper in some vacations if at all possible. I strongly encourage them to take each step one by one.
That said keeping a steady course and simple to-do list with individual assignments can help if you don’t have a planner. If you do have a planner, once they earn your trust, flow with the schedule they set forth and remember to communicate!
Do you have a memorable wedding story that you can share with us?
Loving my career means that there’s a story, a moment, and memory of each event— that’s the bonus of working in a field that brings couple’s vision to life. The clearest memories are of our most recent work. We had a couple who did a killer job with their first dance this winter. It was filled with several dips and lifts and kisses—the crowd cheered not only at the end but throughout, I will never forget how joyful that felt, what an honor to witness!
What’s your go-to breakfast?
For the past 10-years my weekday breakfast was plain yogurt with a jelly mix in (flavor dependent on my mood) and a 1/4 cup of granola. I think I wore that one out, so I’ve been exploring the last couple of months. Recently it’s been an egg (hard boiled or over easy) with salt, pepper and perhaps a slice of toast.
My essential morning ritual since my days in NYC has been a hot cup of water with half a lemon, a teaspoon of local honey and a dash of high-quality salt. That drink gets me going energetically and helps me focus.
What’s your favorite workout to do when traveling?
Jennifer, here’s where I need your help! Walking is usually my only workout when I travel, so I cannot wait to try your video fitness sessions. I love that they are 30 minutes and can be done anywhere!
Share with us your dream honeymoon destination!
I feel really lucky because I lived my dream honeymoon! My husband and I spent three weeks traveling Europe. We started in Tuscany, traveled to Rome and stayed in Positano. Then we spent a week in France, initially in the Riviera, into the countryside and finally in Paris. Our last stop was Greece, Santorini to be exact. The food, the wine, the relaxation was everything. What a trip!
I am so thrilled to have you as a guest contributor on mindbodybride in the coming months, can you give us a little hint about what tips you will be sharing?
Thank you for having me! We’re going to dive into what brides can do to reduce their anxiety and help them identify their personal style— including the ever important wedding gown! We’ll also talk about one of my favorite topics wedding registry. Lots of tips and goodies to help ensure a fun planning process and a personal wedding day!
