I’ve been on something of a sugar kick lately, and not in a bad way! Here’s a recap:
- How To Make A Low Sugar Breakfast Smoothie (The Overwhelmed Bride)
When I moved to the US in 2011 I was amazed with all the sneaky places that sugar was hiding. It’s in the bread, salad dressing, pre-made sauces, cereal, granola bars, yogurt, chips, dips and salsa … the list goes on!
I remember standing in front of a wall of yogurt during my first visit to an American grocery store. I had never seen so much yogurt in my life, yet I couldn’t find a single full-fat, unflavored variety. Riding on the “fat is bad” marketing myth, the manufacturers pulled out the fat, added in sugar and artificial fillers to improve the taste and texture, and then branded it “healthy”.
The problem is that humans are designed to metabolize fat efficiently, it’s the sugar, starches and anything artificial that our bodies have a hard time with. Once the fat has been removed from a product, such as yogurt or ice cream, all the body is receiving is a direct shot of sugar, which, if not metabolized, turns straight into … fat!
Keep in mind that not all sugars are ‘bad’. Sugar is required for proper metabolic function, to prevent stress on the body, and for cellular repair. But these beneficial sugars come from natural, whole and unprocessed foods; they are not the same as the processed and refined sugars hiding in many products on the supermarket shelves.
It’s the processed and refined sugars that we should be avoiding.
When we rely too heavily on sugary food we become lethargic and irritable. While a quick “pick-me-up” might seem like a good idea, very soon those cravings will return.
